DI Rob Brennan touches down in the USA
Those wonderful folks at Blasted Heath, who are doing a cracking job on the first two books in my Gus Dury series, have now launched my first two DI Rob Brennan books in the USA.
I turned down an offer by Random House in the USA to put these books out in paper and digital in favour of the smart and agile Blasted Heathens and I'm delighted I did, with the books arriving at a special discounted launch price for a limited time.
So, what's the hook with this Edinburgh-set detective series?
The sedulous Brennan is a world away from the erratic Dury - he won't even drink in front of his colleagues - and he's a family man with the status of public servant to think about. The first in the series, TRUTH LIES BLEEDING, opens with four teenagers finding the mutilated corpse of a young girl stuffed into a dumpster. Who is she? Where did she come from? Who killed her and why? Above all, where is the baby to which she has obviously recently given birth? are the questions driving Brennan.
In MURDER MILE Brennan is seeking out the 'Edinburgh Ripper' after a spate of near identical killings in the Scottish capital city. The detective, and the books, have been well-received by the critics in the UK; but don't take my word for that:
New York Journal of Books
"a compelling and convincing portrayer of raw emotions in a vicious milieu"
"if you're a fan of Ian Rankin, Denise Mina or Irvine Welsh, this is most certainly one for you"
"Black renders his nocotine-stained domain in a hardboiled slang that fizzles with vicious verisimilitude"
"Ripping, gutsy prose and a witty wreck of a protagonist makes this another exceptionally compelling, bright and even original thriller"
"Comparisons with Rebus will be obvious. But that would be too easy... Black has put his defiant, kick-ass stamp on his leading man, creating a character that deftly carries the story through every razor-sharp twist and harrowing turn."
:: TRUTH LIES BLEEDING and MURDER MILE are now available digitally in the USA for the first time.
